Steeped in the jazz tradition, other genres such as hip hop, funk and soul further influence his musical palette. The music of Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane have inspired and guided Stuart since he first picked up the horn at age 12.
A graduate of the Humber College 4 year BA in Jazz, Stuart has had the privilege of studying with Canadian saxophone masters such as Pat LaBarbera, Kirk MacDonald, Nick Morgan and Mark Promane.
Stuart has had the pleasure to play alongside noteworthy musicians such as Alex Dean, Daniel Jamieson, Mark Promane and Al Kay. He has recorded and performed alongside Collin Barrett, and has shared the stage with the legendary Will Kennedy.
He is excited to announce the formation of his newest project, ALKMY. A 5-piece, heavy hitting neo-soul group with significant hip-hop and jazz influence. This group features all of Stuart’s original compositions and productions, as well as tunes off of his “Antimony” EP (2016) You can catch ALKMY every third thursday of each month at Poetry Jazz Cafe at 9:30 pm.
Stuart is a member of the underground, Toronto based Jazz-funk collective; ART the Band. After a tour of Europe in August 2016, a tour of the United States in the spring of 2017, and a new album dropping in the fall of 2017, the group is certainly gaining momentum in the Canadian scene.
He plays with Sage Harris and his backing band, “Saturday Life”. Sage is a rising Pop/Soul artist in the Toronto and broader Canadian music scene.
Stuart is the resident saxophone player for Evolved Entertainment, one of Toronto’s finest event companies.
An avid producer of hip hop, Stuart has collaborated with numerous up-and-coming Toronto rappers. Aside from his hip hop endeavours, he enjoys entertaining on the horn in intimate bar and restaurant settings.
With a newfound passion for teaching students of all ages, Stuart offers lessons for saxophone, flute, piano and music production.
Stuart is available for weddings, private/corporate events, and established venues to lend his voice and jazz conception to any setting, creating an easing, relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for listeners of all tastes.
Other services include teaching, audio mixing, producing, and session work.
Utilizing his home studio setup, Stuart records alto, tenor and flute overdubs for pre-recorded sessions of all genres, for any group wanting a powerful, informed and exciting sound to be a part of their project!
